German Visa & Work Permit (up to 20h/week) | Leipzig

Non-EU citizens need a visa to study German in Germany, while Schengen residents can join without one. Since March 2024, non-EU students can work up to 20 hours per week during their course. Tourist visas allow up to 90 days of study, but longer stays require a dedicated visa or permit extension. Sprachschule Aktiv Leipzig will gladly guide you through the process upon full advance course payment.

Sprachschule Aktiv Leipzig Helps You Get the Right Visa

Thanks to our intensive German courses in Leipzig, you can extend your stay in Germany or use them to apply for an entry visa. Normally, there is no other possibility. Classes take place Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM (depending on room availability; preferred time slots cannot be guaranteed) and consist of a total of 20–24 teaching units of 45 minutes each per week.

The price for these courses is € 499.00 per month, with a minimum booking duration of four months. If your application is successful, the German authorities will issue your entry visa or extend your residence permit for the duration of your course attendance with us at Sprachschule Aktiv Leipzig.

Our processing fee for a visa case is € 499.00 (already included in the price), which is non-refundable even if the visa is denied.

People from the Schengen area should not expect significant effort: you do not need a visa, only a legally valid passport or national ID card. For this group of people, registering online is completely sufficient.

From experience, we know that visa processing usually takes no less than 3–4 months. Therefore, we ask that you select a course start date that is three to six months after submitting your visa application.

If you live outside the Schengen area, obtaining a pure visitor visa for 90 days may also be possible. However, 90 days are not enough to learn multiple German levels. For this reason, we at Sprachschule Aktiv recommend a language course with a minimum duration of six months. If you want to be on the safe side or have little to no knowledge of German, we advise taking a course with a duration of nine to twelve months. In such cases, you will no longer need a standard visa, but a visa for a language course or another specific purpose.

The probability of approval for a language course visa is higher the longer the course duration is and the more realistic your future plans in Germany appear. For the best results, as mentioned earlier, we recommend an intensive course lasting nine to twelve months. Intensive courses with 20 hours per week should be sufficient to significantly improve your German skills. If you need help applying for your visa or extending your residence, please do not hesitate to ask us—we are happy to support you!

Language Students May Work Up to 20 Hours per Week – Support with Job Placement and Preliminary Employment Contracts for Visa Applications

Since March 1, 2024, language course participants from non-EU countries are permitted to work up to 20 part-time hours per week alongside their language course (not during class hours, of course). Language students can apply to local companies starting from their very first day of class. You are welcome to actively talk to our office staff about available options, as we can also assist with job searches. We gladly support you in placing preliminary employment contracts with German employers through our job agency partners.

In our classrooms, we also post information where you can find local employment agencies. When issuing your visa, please ensure that the right to work 20 hours per week is explicitly stated in the visa document.

The documents listed below are required for a visa application or residence extension in Leipzig:

  • Passport/ID: Outside the Schengen area, a valid passport is required; within the Schengen area, a valid national ID card is often sufficient.

  • Health Insurance: Health insurance is required during your stay, and you must provide proof of it. Our partner Care Concept in Germany can assist you with this.

  • Blocked Account (Sperrkonto): If you are staying in Germany for a longer period (e.g., for study purposes), you will usually need a blocked account. Another partner of ours, Coracle, can help you with this.

  • Application Forms & Appointment: You must complete the visa application form in duplicate or submit a form for a residence permit and schedule an appointment with the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde).

  • Passport Photos: Two current passport photos are required. You should visit a professional photographer who meets the legal requirements for visa or residence permit photos. German embassies often point out photographers nearby who can take these photos.

  • Proof of Course Attendance: You must prove that you are participating in a German course at our school. Further information can be found below.

  • Educational Background: Proof of completed school, vocational, or university education (or an intermediate school leaving certificate) is usually required.

  • Job/Apprenticeship Contracts: We are also happy to assist in arranging an apprenticeship contract and/or a preliminary work contract for up to 20 hours per week before entry, which will significantly increase your chances of obtaining a visa.

  • Proof of Payment: You will be asked for proof that you have paid for the visa/course.

  • Important Note on Refunds: Proof of payment is strictly required for an entry visa. If your residence permit is not granted or is only issued for part of the course period, you will receive a pro-rata refund minus the € 499.00 processing fee.

Once you have received the visa letter from us, please adhere to the following rules:

1

Submit Application

Please apply for a visa or schedule an interview appointment with the German embassy within two months, and send us official proof of this appointment.

2

Postponing Course Start

You can postpone the start date once for free by up to four months. After that, the fee for each additional postponement is € 250.00.

3

Time Limit for Postponement

A new date for the postponed course start must be set within three months! Any postponement beyond that is no longer permitted.

5

Visa Rejection

In case of a visa rejection, you must send us the official rejection notice before the originally planned course start date. You will then receive your course fees back minus the € 499.00 processing fee. Please note that a refund is excluded if the course has already been postponed.

6

Transparent Communication

Please communicate transparently and regularly regarding the status of your visa application, residence extension, or any obstacles encountered in Germany.
